So if you think you fit in, to apply you need to contact us by e-mail at the following address, sending a short biographical sketch so we can have an idea of your background, abilities, and interests. Also write a short description of what attracts you to sailing on Karaka, what you feel you?ll be contributing to the crew and what you hope to gain, along with a recent photograph of yourself. No CV please.
crewkaraka@hotmail.com
(The adress has been changed so that both Kim and Tom can now answer crew applications, the ketchkaraka@hotmail.com adress is now exclusively for Tomīs personal contact)
We often sail in remote areas but we try to check e-mails regularly otherwise. It is the only reliable way to contact us. Phone calls are not practical for an application of this kind.
We also now have a facebook account for the boat, and you can try to find us using the address above. We are not very serious about keeping it up to date but there are a lot of recent photos on it.
Otherwise, if we turn you down, because we are full or because the timing is not right, there are other boats run by friends of us that are taking crew on a basis similar to ours.
Check the links here.
I have been doing this now for more than 5 years; the web offers a great way to advertise the boat, unfortunately that means also being exposed to lots of losers with too much time on their hands. That translates in us getting hundred of applicants that are simply daydreaming, just bored at the office, haven't enough guts, money, you name it. Fact is, we usually try to give people credit, and the result is giving away the bunk to someone without a face, turning other people down, and then the person bailing out last minute (lost his passport, sudden death in the family, sudden death of favourite pet, "circumstances beyond my control" etc.). In this way we sail with empty bunks while some people get turned downand all the while we've been also doing lots of useless emailing, waiting, arranging, explaining to make things easy for the 'newcomer'. It's pretty frustrating having this happen over and over again...so, please consider if you are seriously interested before telling us you are coming, this is for real. Otherwise we try to always respond to any enquiries.
